Report from the 2006 Wooden Spoon National Schools Sevens Tournament, in partnership with Rosslyn Park FC

After 1150 matches, some played in Arctic conditions, the Tournament finished on Friday 24th March exactly on time after five days of extremely high class rugby.  There was a record number of 597 squads, including U13s from Ukraine and Romania, U16s from Switzerland, U18s Girls from Hungary and U18s from Romania and South Africa – all financially sponsored and some hosted by English schools.

In the Juniors, Brynteg won their second title (2002); there were first time title wins for Bedford (Prep schools), Epsom College (Colts), Colston’s (Girls and Festival) and a magnificent 11th time success for Millfield in the Open.

Although fortunately there is a decline in “touchline assistance”, we were shocked by the verbal abuse hurled at some referees by parents.  This MUST be completely stamped out and steps have been taken already to make this totally clear to the Heads of the schools concerned.  The Committee reserves the right to ban a school from future Tournaments, due to the parents’ disgraceful behaviour. *

However, everyone remarked on how friendly the Tournament is and the camaraderie between the Referees is something to witness first hand.  Probably the total  lack of rain helped humour to be in pole position.

Our thanks for ensuring the smooth running operation are extended to the referees, Ground Managers and their assistants, the Medical Officers, the Groundsmen and all volunteers from Rosslyn Park.

Last but by no means least, without Wooden Spoon’s partnership, the Tournament simply would not have happened in 2006 – our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the Wooden Spoon personnel during the Tournament week.
